“The role of the artist is to make the revolution irresistible.” - Toni Cade Bambara

Following the social unrest in recent years sparked by the murders of Black men and women by the police in the United States, artists are responding by highlighting a history of racial injustice and the plight of those in the African diaspora. In the history of revolutionary art, artists go beyond ‘art for art's sake’ and merge their commitment to social justice with visual language.

By Any Medium Necessary examines the idea of the ‘revolutionary artist’ through dialogue with organizers, artists, and designers who provide valuable insight to creatives seeking to transform their medium as a tool for social justice. The first segment of this program took place in July of 2020 via zoom, and centered Afro-Caribbean and West Indian creatives who are heeding the call for social justice by examining the unique issues within their communities. Taking place in a virtual format, the interactive dialogue was hosted by entrepreneur and former VP of Starbucks Marc Farrell and fashion designer Anya Ayoung-Chee. The panel guests included activist and poet Dr. Angelique Nixon, photographer Jean-Andre Antoine, and the mixed-media artist Ashleigh Alexandria.
